Demos still play a crucial role in the music business. As we speak, some musicians you’ve listened to over and over again are working on demos of their new music. Right now record labels are sorting through demos of unsigned musicians in the hopes of finding new artists to work with. Having great songs is the initial and probably the most important goal of a musician. But, if you want to make money in the music production industry, then creating a quality demo comes a close second. Recording Studio operates a quality recording environment, with professional musicians and experienced demo makers with the contacts to get those recordings into the hands of those who can do something productive with them. The following are the top reasons why demos are tossed by label companies and music executives.
1) Quality of Recorded Material is Poor. You may be surprised to know the sound quality of most submitted demo recordings are horrendous. Record your demo in a professional music studio. Just because you’re using Pro Tools doesn’t guarantee amazing sound quality. Especially if you connect a mediocre musical instrument to it.
2) Artist is Not Original. No one wants to hear someone who sounds like everyone else. In fact even popular artists whose every song sounds like the last one become predictable and boring.
3) Submitting Videos instead of CDs. Make is easy for the execs reviewing your demo. All they want to do is listen to your songwriting abilities and musical talents. If you want to send a video to them just give them the link to it on youtube, or even better on your own webpage.
4) Contact Info not on Demo. How do you expect them to get back to you? It seems silly to even mention this but you’ll be surprised by how many demos are submitted without the artists contact information. Every demo should have the artist’s name, phone, email, website, myspace, address etc.
5) Music Niche and Label Niche Doesn’t Match. Why don’t you just flat out tell the music executives that you didn’t do your research on the label. Not every label accepts every type of music. A label that produces dance music artists doesn’t want to hear your hip hop demo.
6) The Musician Doesn’t Perform Live. That means less money to be made by the record label on tickets and events.
7) Submitting Unsolicited Demos. They didn’t ask for it but you gave it to them anyway. They probably won’t even waste their time sending it back to you.
8 The Top Songs Aren’t Identified. You should only have about 4 tracks on the demo and two of the best should be highlighted.
9) The Music Sucks. Every artist should be prepared to hear this criticism from time to time. Not everyone is going to love it. Just like not everyone loves Justin Beiber, but that doesn’t stop him from making music and making money. Most demos sound like the American Idol contestants that couldn’t sing and just wanted to get on TV.
10) Musicians Can’t Play Instruments Well Consistently. This is why its important to have your demo recorded in a music studio where it can be edited to perfection.
